NAHL to Overlook Tier II Standards…again?

Junior Hockey News/Steven Heisler Link

Something else that the league needs to be very concerned about; the ten leagues that make up the Canadian Junior Hockey League have changed their import rules this season. In the past, any player from out of the branch was considered an import. This means that a player from Alberta would be an import for a team in Ontario. That rule has changed to include all of Canada as non-imports. This change opens up to seven roster spots for American players, a catastrophic turn of events for NAHL teams.

Maybe I'm misreading or just don't understand, but how does a rule change concerning Canadian Provinces open up 7 roster spots for a US citizens?

From what I can tell, the rule change is two-fold: considering all Canadians to be non-imports as one part. As the other, teams can carry up to seven American players. At least, that's my interpretation. I know Heisler's on here from time to time, perhaps he can clarify this for us.

I wondered are there TWO different rules changes? One being that Canadians are no longer considered imports and a SECOND being they upped the number of US imports allowed, with one not having anything to do with the other?

Anyway, allowing 7 imports would certainly leave less roster spots for Canadian kids. And this on the heels of the CHL adding restrictions for European goalies allowed into their leagues.

I feel like it's two rule changes, but probably announced as one. Best explanation I've got.

The US import number was actually dropped from 8 to 7.
