Before taking his first steps towards realizing his NHL dream, however, Carle traveled to the NHL Combine for the top North American prospects. There, doctors noticed irregularities during his physical, leading him to consult the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

That’s when the veil was lifted from the Carle’s lifelong disorder, a condition where a portion of the heart thickens and makes it difficult for blood to leave. Mixed with strenuous-athletic activity, it can be lethal and has been linked to death in many young athletes.
