U.S. Hockey Report is reporting that Coach Carlson is getting serious consideration for the head coaching job at UMass-Amherst.

Any buzz out there on who made the 25-man list?

I would be very surprised. He is part owner of the team. Can't see him jumping to the NCAA when he just bought a share of the team. I have been wrong though.

Pretty much what CHC is saying:

Quote

USHR reporting that Cedar Rapids RoughRiders (USHL) head coach/GM Mark Carlson is a "strong" candidate for the UMass opening

Couldn't he sell his part of the team if he wanted to?

He definitely could but it doesn't make sense. Why would he/ they stick $600000 in the stable just to sell his pary a year later. I have no doubt he gets alot of interest but it would shock me for him to move on at this point

You can still be part owner of a USHL team and not be the coach...and not live in the same town. Not sure if the NCAA would consider that a conflict of interest, though.

Are you sure he has a 600k stake? I'm led to believe he has what amounts to a sliver of club ownership...........

Carlson would leave CR for maybe just a handful of jobs. Is UMass one of them? I think so, since he agreed to interview at Northeastern and his Alma mater (UMass-Lowell) and it's a chance to return back east. I'm all but certain there's a clause in his contract where one of the other owners buys out his stake in the team....nobody would agree to that deal otherwise.....

All good points. I just dont see it with his wife's family being from CR. Everything I have hears here though is he turned Lowell down. Why turn down your alma mater to take a rival job the following year. I have reached out to some friends of his to see what they know.

Rico....not a $600000 stake. That is what the ownership group invested in the stable...a city owned arena

I heard this rumor last year that he may leave for a college head coach position. I guess it depended on which college. If he has aspirations to coach college, it makes perfect sense to me. Head coach for a USHL team, head coach for a D1 college, then who knows if that leads to more opportunities at the pro-level. All requires some sort of head coach experience.

The Lowell job was never offered to him which really surprised many people, myself included since his teams always play a Hockey East- like style. However, Bazin was Lowell's guy right from the start because of his vast superior college coaching experience. I think he would've accepted the offers if they came but i heard they didn't. I could see how he might not interview very well too, which might've turned people off who don't know him well.

The investment Jauch and co. made to the arena was larger than 600k, i've heard more like 750k-800k.

You must have better sources then I.....it will be interesting how this plays out! While I hope he stays you can't fault him to move on.

Anybody have an educated guess as to how much money Carlson's stake is in the Riders?....... Again, I heard it was small. In other words IMO probably not enough to keep him from moving on if the opportunity presented itself.

This Umass job search is totally f'd up. Nothing would shock me at this point so i can't help but think the chances of Carlson leaving are pretty slim but it would be a pretty rare opportunity he would be turning down......Should hear something rather quickly though.

Carlson has told one of my sources ....Jeff Johnson of the Gazette .....that he has indeed intervieed for the job but did not say if an offer was on the table. Wow I am shocked! Seems it could be like the Deluca situation....where there is smoke there is fire.

Good to know. I wasn't sure what the NCAA rules are. In my opinion, it would be a conflict of interest to have a stake in a USHL team as a NCAA coach. Especially when you end up recruiting kids from that USHL team.

I think the system already has "ties" with in what I would call a coaching fraternity even without ownership.
