The puck was shot into the corner in the Leafs’ zone. Bower moved toward the puck uncertainly, leaving himself exposed from behind. Howe bore down toward the puck. Howe, the toughest guy around, could’ve plastered Bower’s head against the glass, perhaps deciding the Cup.

Instead, he yelled: “Look out, John, I’m behind you.”

The Leafs won the Cup. I was 16, living in Toronto. I read the story the next day in the newspaper. Howe’s “Look out, John” comes to me 48 years later.

Not only was Dryden one of the best to ever play, he was one smart dude. Wouldn't play for the Canadiens unless they allowed him to attend college at the same time he played................. Indeed, times are so much different. Damn shame.

No, Bower and Howe weren't wusses. They were mens men who had enough respect not only for themselves as athletes and human beings, but for the sport and sporting itself.

Ken Dryden, a complete man of class. One of my favorites in my formative years of loving hockey. I miss the "true enforcers", fisticuffs instead of the blindsides, and head shots. The game is so much different than as late as the 80's. I watch old NHL films from playoff through the 70's, it is just a different time and a different game. The "Broad Street Bullies" would run your ass over, or knock you in to next week legally. They were a team of talented enforcers, and we will never see the likes of them again.
