Back in October of 2011, University of Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks head coach Dean Blais said during a fan-attended luncheon that UNO would host an outdoor game against the University of North Dakota in February of 2013. The venue for the outdoor game would be TD Ameritrade Park, the new baseball stadium built near downtown Omaha.

Here's a message board thread from MavPuck.com that discusses the topic further: http://www.mavpuck.c...p?TOPIC_ID=8519

According to Blais, the Omaha Lancers would also use the outdoor rink to host the Lincoln Stars that same day, or weekend. I blogged about it here.

Well, I received some good information over the weekend that this event is a go. I've been told that organizers would like both games to be held on Saturday, February 9th, 2013. The Lancers would play the Stars in the afternoon, and then UNO would play UND later that evening.

We're still a year away so a lot could happen between now and then. Personally, I would rather have the two games held on different days. Maybe have the Stars-Lancers game on Saturday, and then the UNO-UND game on Sunday that weekend.

Weather could play havoc with the scheduling also, as a MavPuck member mentions in the article I linked above. We've had an unseasonably warm winter so far, but the weather changes so drastically here in just a short amount of time. I'm not sure I'd want to spend 4-6 hours outdoors watching back-to-back hockey games in -5F degree weather.

Regardless, I really hope this comes to fruition. I would definitely attend both games, as would a lot of hockey fans here in Lincoln.

I gave up my tickets to The Winter Classic at Wrigley Field a couple years back for face value when the Hawks played Team Sweden, I mean Red Wings. No way I sit in that weather for a game.

But people do go wild over these outdoor things. I'd love to see this happen for the Stars and Lancers. Great exposure for them and all of the USHL.

This would be fun to attend. Maybe my first visit to TD Ameritrade Park is for a hockey game. Interesting :)

Call me a fair weather fan if you'd like, but I have almost no desire to sit outside and watch hockey. It's cold enough when I watch it indoors. :) I understand its a good deal and all that jazz, but this fan will probably pass.

Wondering what will happen with the Ann Arbor rink next year.

When Boston hosted the WC, they had *several* other games at Fenway (college & high school), and it was so successful, they built a rink inside the ballpark again this year and did two weekends of "Frozen Fenway" outdoor games.

With the Big House rink, one would think that UMich would get in on the action with a game. It would be a great opportunity to show off the USNDTP teams that are based in Ann Arbor against USHL teams, although that's usually during their hiatus for international competition.

There's also talk of a college hockey double header at Soldier Field next year. I posted on the USHL facebook page that I thought the league should try to get the Steel involved. The league responded with something along the lines of 'good idea' but who knows if it will turn into anything.

Confirmed.

The Lincoln Stars will play an outdoor game against the Omaha Lancers on February 9th, 2013 at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha. After the Stars-Lancers game, the University of North Dakota will take on the University of Nebraska-Omaha.
