Cubs article.

Santo slipped into a coma Wednesday, and passed Thursday night. One of the best third basemen to ever play the game, Santo had been notoriously rejected by the Hall of Fame, despite posting hall worthy numbers, and being heralded by Brooks Robinson as a superior defensive third baseman (Brooks Robinson is considered to be the greatest defensive third baseman of all time).

As a diehard Cubs fan (baseball was the first sport I fell in love with, and the Cubs my beloved team), this comes incredibly hard. I'd thought for a few years now that the Cubs really need to win the World Series soon so Ronnie could die happy.

R.I.P. #10, you're already missed and always beloved.

I could not possibly be farther from being a Cubs fan, but I will miss Santo. I'm old enough to have seen him play plenty, and this dude could play. Heard today he has the 7th best numbers of any 3rd baseman ever to play the game. A travesty he ain't in the HOF....

RIP Ron Santo!! :beers:

When I heard this morning that Ron Santo passed away it was a really a shot to the gut. Being a huge Cubs fan obviously I want them to win, but for a guy like Santo who played as a Cub and is probably the biggest Cub fan it really sucks that he didn't get into the Hall of Fame and get to see the Cubs win. He did a lot for JDRF which I could write about all day, but more importantly he is one of those characters that makes life pretty damn cool.

RIP Ron Santo #10. :beers:

My heart was ripped out this morning......no more day games, drinking Old Style out on the lawn, and listening to Ronny.

I good man indeed, RIP Ron.

At first, I was pretty gotten down by this. But then I heard the story of an early season game, right after they'd removed the plexiglass from the radio booth, and right after Ron had his second leg amputated. Pat Hughes remarked on how cold it was, and Ronnie replied with "Yeah, my feet are freezing". Hughes was speechless for a couple seconds, then Santo started laughing, and Hughes joined in.

This man was not only a deserving hall of famer for baseball, he was a hall of fame human being. As Pat Hughes said today, "The Cubs have lost their biggest fan."

As a life-long Cub fan.....this is a sad day. I will never forget the ups and downs of Ron Santo on the radio. He was just like any old Cub fan out there, he lived and died the Cub's every play. He would cheer them, beg them, and moan them just as I would.

It won't be the same without Ronnie. Just won't ever be the same.

I am most sad that he did not get to enjoy getting the call from Cooperstown.

I was watching TV last night, and PBS (in the middle of a pledge drive, so I felt this was a pretty classy move) aired an episode of Chicago Tonight from 2003 (I could only tell this from the talks of Hee Seop Choi for rookie of the year) with Pat and Ron, and Ron said he didn't want to get into the Hall posthumously, even if he did have some issues with the word.

And, honestly, even though he was a Brewers guy, can anyone imagine a Ron Santo/Bob Eucker radio broadcast, even if it's just one inning? Now that would've been an all-star game!

I'd hope the Cubs wear a #10 patch on their jerseys. Not just this season, but until the curse is over. Ronnie said he wanted to be a part of it when the Cubs win it all, and, well, that way, he can.
