This is a great story.
Some of you, Wings fans and non-fans alike, probably know about the blog Abel To Yzerman that is a part of the Kuklas' Korner network run by Paul Kukla. Abel To Yzerman (A2Y) is a Red Wings fan-run blog, run by a naval officer based in Washington D.C. It's extremely partisan and makes no bones about being so. It's quite popular -- GDT's/LiveBlogs easily run into 1,000 comments/posts for big games, and unpopular games during unpopular times of year (like now when everyone's readying for the holidays) run to 300 or 400 posts often. People post on there from all over the world...
Anyhow, one of the active posters there happens to run the fan blog "Red Wings Brasil", a Red Wings blog in his native tongue. He's a native Brazilian (still living there) who is a die-hard Wings fan (thank to EA's NHL series on the SEGA Genesis/MegaDrive), and in an interview with another fan-run Wings blog a few days ago he let it slip that not only has he never been to a Red Wings game, he's never even met another Red Wings fan in person in his life. He follows online (including video feeds) and the occasional Wings game that he can get on cable down there.
Abel to Yzerman acted quickly, and decided this wasn't right.
So they decided to set up a fund. They're raising money to fly the Brazilian to Detroit, get him a place to stay, and tickets to a Red Wings game at the Joe.
Then it was decided to take it a step further -- since he's never met a Wings fan in real life, they decided that this year's blog reader get-together should be at that game, so he can not only meet tons of fans and see the game, but also meet the people who are regulars on the blog.
Who says fan blogs are useless?
