  2. USHL GDT (Saturday Recap 11/18)

C Illinois @ USA - U18 Chicago @ Youngstown Tri-City @ Des Moines Madison @ Dubuque Fargo @ Sioux City Musky @ Sioux Falls Green Bay @ Waterloo Steel Site Steel overcome 3-1 deficit to earn point in OT loss at Youngstown Phantoms Site/Matt Lipcsak In a game of firsts Phantoms top Chicago in OT Storm Site/Kenadall Grayson Storm fall 4-1 at Des Moines Bucs Site/Ben Gislason Bucs answer the bell, beat Tri City There was no question about the importance of tonight’s game, even though it was game 14 of a young season… The coaching staff knew it, the fans knew it, and apparently so did the players. As the Buccaneers rebounded in a big way tonight from Urbandale, defeating the Western Conference leading Tri-City Storm 4-1. A great crowd was on hand tonight at Buccaneer Arena, and the Bucs did not disappoint. After a frightful evening last night in Kearney, Des Moines had their best period of the weekend up to that point in period one. Caps Site Caps lose tight game at Dubuque Saints Site/Jordan Kuhns Saints snap 3 game skid with late 3rd period goal SC Journal/Jerry Giese Musketeers follow win with 5-1 home loss to Fargo “I liked the beginning of the game,” said Strand. “I thought we had our moments before that first goal against us. I thought we had some good energy going and good space. We played a first-place team that once they got that momentum for themselves, after losing themselves last night 3-0, they basically shoved it down our throat. “It’s a winning business. So when you don’t win, it’s an angry day. We have to learn to follow up a win with a win.” “We have guys who have pointed in the past who have not pointed per se,” said Strand. “We have guys who have pointing expectations who have not pointed. At the end of the day, you have to be committed to those easy ones or the ones that used to go in at the levels where you are at aren’t gamers any more. You have to earn those.” Jacks Site/Scott Bradford Jacks go up 3-0, give up the next 5, fall 7-4 at Sioux Falls Stampede Site/Jim Olander Herd overcome 3 goal deficit, 7 players score as they sweep Muskegon before 6,031
  3. What Have You Noticed Around The USHL?

Sioux City has yet to win a game in regulation. Strand’s squad, 2-1 in shootouts and 2-1 in overtime, hasn’t been blanked in 13 games, but has been held to one goal six times.
  4. USHL GDT (Saturday Recap 11/18)

Steel's Stucker gives up possession on entry as he dumps while in OT in a 3 on 3 format, Phantoms gain the puck, Metsa beautifully fights off a great dogged forecheck by Vidgren to keep possession along the end wall, a quick give and go with Parrotino has Metsa push the puck up and out to Ellis, he is joined by Parrotino on a partial 2 on 1 as my guy Seyfert is hauling on the backcheck down main street, Ellis keeps and wrists one from the low right circle, shouldered down by Autio, rebound to the side of the cage, Ellis nicely stays with it and wrists one from below the goal line off of Autio for the game winner.
  5. USHL GDT (Saturday Recap 11/18)

Champs nicely get the thing to OT to get at least a point....... Hope they look at the film of the last minute. Bad puck management getting the puck out. Weak backhand cross ice passes in the neutral zone ain't good.
  6. USHL GDT (Saturday Recap 11/18)

At 14:00 of the 3rd the champs tie the thing at 3....... The Steel just killed of a tripping and at the end off it the 2nd ranked points guy in the league, McLaughlin, beautifully single handedly kills 25 seconds scrumming with 3 Phantoms in the YT zone at the wall after stripping a Dman coming out. Penalty over and the Phantoms in the Steel zone and I see McL still on the ice and think this kid needed to get off after that leg burning effort to end the kill..... YT throws a puck to the crease from behind he net, Daschke nicely gets a skate on it and pushes it up to Dugan who is well positioned at the point, 2 on 1 with McL on the other side, Dman nicely takes away the pass, Dugan shoots from below the right circle, rebound dribbles out to the other side and McL slams it home. 3-3 with 6 minutes to go.
  7. USHL GDT (Saturday Recap 11/18)

Thru 2 in what has become a chippy contest, 3-2 YT setting up for a nice 3rd period. Steel's top 4 Dman Pietroniro out as he was given a gamer in that horrible sequence by the refs in the 2nd. Steel dressed 7 Dman so they will have 6 available for the 3rd. Dman Buechler should see regular minutes in the 3rd ..... YT has nicely killed 5 penalties of the top ranked Steel PP thru 2.
  8. USHL GDT (Saturday Recap 11/18)

15:00 into the 2nd at YT with the Phantoms leading 3-2 over Chicago. Good game for the most part with YT coming off the best rd trip in the league this yr as far as I know playing 3 in 3 and coming out with 6 points. However they just missed a big opportunity with a gift 3:00 PP to extend the lead and now are on the kill as Esposito takes another stick penalty and his league leading 14th minor of the yr (thanks for being prepared Mr Sanderson). Difference in this one so far is a shorty by YT, their 3rd on the yr.
  9. USHL GDT (Saturday Recap 11/18)

My first time mentioning the refs this yr. They horribly mangled the pancaking of Lillibridge by Gresock into the wall and Pietro standing up for him at 10:00 of the 2nd giving YT 3:00 of PP time. On the following faceoff the refs take a player from each team before puck drop as they realize they've mangled this game into a point that trouble will follow. Horrid.
  10. USHL GDT (Saturday Recap 11/18)

My guy Seyfert is really becoming a difference maker in every zone. Forechecking, backchecking, plays the body responsibly, head up, elbows to the back of the head in the crease or showing high end speed and dangles. By yrs end this kid will have to be accounted for when the opposition watches film like Dugan and McLaughlin are. Paired with Mastrosimone this is a high IQ line with skill, speed, energy and willingness.... Alabon started this speedy kid on the 4th line, Mastosimione too, and the pair obviously kept their heads down and mouths shut and gave Alabon no choice as they worked their way up to the top 6. Mastro is an 01 and both he and Seyfert are on the first unit of the 2nd ranked PK! Their centerman Vidgren started on a wing this yr and was moved to center maybe 5 games in and has played the position nicely and responsibly. A first yr 97 played in Finland his whole career that Elite Prospects has as a wing. Don't know if this is his first time ever playing center but he's done so nicely ........ So the whole 2nd line started somewhere else in the lineup to start the yr, Mastro and Seyfert on the 4th to start the yr rotating as the 13th forward. I've been keeping an eye for a similar ascent for my guy Nick Abruzzuse. Noticed the smallish 99 center drafted by LIN in the 15th rd in 16 in camp. Kid played low with leverage, nice speed, head up with the awareness to make reads and plays on pucks in all 3 zones. Kid showed the IQ to use gears in all 3 zones instead of playing hair on fire. Kid is a rookie with 11 games and with the foundation he showed in camp I see him forcing his way up too although the 4th line with him at C and Magera, who started the yr as a 2C, was moved to wing with CJ Walker on the other side makes for a troublesome 4th line for the opposition. The 4th line is the one Alabon puts out after a goal scored for or against. Tells you much ...... Lotta moving parts to the Steel lineup so far. High marks to the kids for working up the ladder and Alabon making the right moves, although if you read FYC I've been ahead of him on Mastro, Seyfert, Magera and Abruzzuse.
